Types of eyelid surgery
Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery is a common procedure performed by cosmetic surgeons worldwide. The procedure entails the removal of excess, sagging skin and/or fat from the eyelid and can be done on either the upper, lower, or both eyelid surfaces.It is a common and relatively quick procedure that can have excellent results for the patient post-operatively, making them look less tired and much more youthful than before. Scarring is minimal with any blepharoplasty procedure, and any incision line is usually nicely covered by the natural fold of the eyelid. - Upper blepharoplasty: Upper eyelid blepharoplasty offers patients the ability to have their sagging eyelids rejuvenated by removing excess skin, or excess fat or both should there be a need. Many people with overhanging eyelids or bagginess of the upper eyelid opt for an upper blepharoplasty in order to get a more youthful, energetic appearance. In some severe cases, the hanging, loose eyelid can impair vision and therefore an upper blepharoplasty is necessary to improve vision.
- Lower blepharoplasty: A lower blepharoplasty procedure offers the same results as the upper blepharoplasty but it is done under the eye and not on top. Excess fat (fat bags as they are commonly called) and loose, excess skin is removed from the lower eyelid, giving the patient a livelier expression. A point to note with a lower blepharoplasty is that it cannot remove or lessen dark pigmentation or dark circles under the eyes.
- Double eyelid blepharoplasty: Otherwise known as East Asian blepharoplasty, this type of surgery is commonly requested by people of East Asian ethnicity who often have little or no upper or lower eyelid creases. Double eyelid blepharoplasty results in a fresh appearance and a firmer eye area, improving sagging eyelids, but not altering dark circles, sagging eyebrows, or fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes.
